Window CoveringGreat window coverings serve two main purposes. One, they should look fantastic. Two, they should protect your living area from furniture, carpet and art's worst natural enemy-the sun. Remember those blinds that came with your first dorm room? If your window coverings resemble these in any way, you're making a mistake. In fact, too many people neglect their window coverings when they decorate. Window coverings can and should make a great decorative statement-brightening a dreary room, cooling down a room that looks into the light much of the day, and adding dimension to your décor. But they should also serve a practical purpose. The sun can quickly fade your decorating efforts, leaving your upholstery looking splotchy and dry and illuminating grime in your home. You should therefore pick window coverings that protect each room of your home. Gossamer curtains are great for windows that don't let in a lot of natural light, but you don't want to leave bare. And rooms that face the sun for much of the day demand something a little heavier. Pick window coverings that don't require a lot of upkeep. Vertical blinds, the most basic of the window coverings, simply require a wipe with a damp cloth every couple of weeks. Other draperies don't get so obviously dirty, but you'll need to beat them out every few months. Choose window coverings that accommodate your lifestyle, and they're work for you in the long run.
